Gangasagar Mela—Fair by the river
As is everywhere, here also the tale is simple. Gangasagar is where the Ganges meets the sea. An island on the confluence was the venue where Kapilmuni once had had to consume the entire river to make the divine river return the lives of his hundred sons. As usual, a myth managed to take a physical form having a certain source somewhere. The elements of uncertainty are kept aside and another divine destination is marked in remote domain. The believers made it a point to be there on Paush Sankranti (the last day of Paush, usually 14th January), take a dip in the frozen sea, offer prayer, sing hymns, suffer winter, and find roots.
