Aoleung- Dance of the Head-hunters
Beside the Wangchus of Arunachal, the Konyaks of Nagaland were the only head-hunters Verrier Elwin came in contact. And the Konyaks were once used to subscribe to the same old philosophy—if you detach a head from a torso, you will earn the hunted-one’s vitality, and, if you do it many times, immortality might not be an abstract proposition. Every year, from April 1st to 6th, the Konyaks observe Aoling. This is a ritualistic war dance they once practiced before going into the head-hunting spree. The entire regions around the district headquarter—Mon--go into the guise of pre-war movies having a neo-realistic touch, and the cacophony is horrendous.
